Mayor Bloomberg Launches NYC's First Financial Empowerment Center with Phipps CDC
    01-08-09

Mayor Bloomberg addresses press at Phipps Opportunity Center with Stephen Tosh (right) and Ronay Menschel (far right) on hand.
    Angel Aracena/Phipps CDC

On June 19th, Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference to launch the City's first Financial Empowerment Center, which is located at the Phipps Opportunity Center. The Financial Empowerment Center was one of several announcements related to the Mayor's current initiatives to address poverty in New York City.

This program has been in development for some time, starting with a community-based financial services study in partnership with the Department of Consumer Affairs' Office of Financial Empowerment. Last summer, participants of our NYCWorks and Back to Work employment programs conducted two focus groups and 300 surveys with residents of the Melrose section of the Bronx to identify the need for and provision of financial products and services in the community. These results were announced at the press conference by Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz.

The newly launched Financial Empowerment Center is a pilot program that has been designed to meet a critical need in the Melrose community. Services include one-on-one financial counseling and workshops in managing credit and debt, basic banking, and access to affordable financial services and products. Phipps Community Development Corporation was selected to be the provider of these services and our Center will be a proving ground to help determine the effectiveness of such a program, and develop similar centers throughout the City.

2nd Annual Heifer Holiday Donation Drive
    01-08-09

Thanksgiving marks the official beginning of the holiday season, along with the inevitable chorus of advertisements urging us to buy, buy, buy! We would like to invite you to do some giving of a slightly different kind.

Heifer International is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending hunger. Their approach is unique in that they fund small scale agricultural projects in over 80 countries around the world. For example, with $20, you can buy a flock of chicks for a family in Uganda. Once these chicks get older, they produce eggs, which are a great source of nutrition and can be the difference between hunger and starvation for a family. In addition, familes can sell surplus eggs for an additional source of income. Other projects that Heifer International funds are rabbits, bees, llamas, goats, sheep, and cows.

Every day at Phipps, we do good work. Helping people in New York City is our job. This holiday season, let's expand our notion of community, and help families who are a part of the global community. We've started a Phipps Community Development Corporation fundraising team on the Heifer website, and our goal is to raise $500--enough to buy a cow or three llamas or four goats or twenty-four rabbits--before Christmas. Please consider making a donation in honor of a friend or loved one instead of (or in addition to!) a holiday present this year. A gift of any amount would be welcomed: even $5 or $10 can make a difference.

There are two ways to give:
Directly through the team website: go to Phipps CDC Donation Drive, choose the "Join a team" option, and select "Phipps Community Development Corporation" from the team list, and make your donation with a credit card.

Or, you could make out a check to "Heifer International" and give it to Sarah Gulley (at Mott Haven Library) or Angel Aracena (at WFTCC) to mail in.

Last year, we raised over $300. This year, let's join together and make a difference for families around the world. Thank you for your time and attention, and we wish you a happy holiday season!

    11-18-08

By December 21, the Phipps West Farms Technology & Career Center is hoping to donate as many animals as possible to help families in need in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Cameroon, Ecuador, Peru, and more.

If you wish to help an entire family this holiday season, you can do so by making a donation of chicks for $20 or contribute towards a share of a llama for $20. Give a meaningful gift this year and help fight poverty. We have already raised $320 for 2 llamas and a tray of chicks.

Light Up a Life with Llamas

When resources are scarce, it's important that livestock don't use up land reserved for people. At home in rough, mountainous areas of Latin America, llamas are a blessing to families with limited pasture land, and they play a pivotal role in the cultural life of indigenous communities on the high plains of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

Women weave their llamas' fleece into warm clothing to wear or sell. They load them up with goods for market and trek with them across rugged slopes at high altitudes. As they travel, llamas' padded feet don't damage the fragile terrain and their selective browsing doesn't destroy sparse vegetation.

Llamas and their kin, the alpaca, provide Heifer families with invaluable sources of transportation, income and wool, which is prized for making blankets, ponchos, carpet and rope.

Llamas are remarkably disease resistant and require little care; they can carry small loads for distances over rugged slopes at high altitudes.

Grace Dodge High School Interns Awarded Prizes
    09-26-08

On June 10, ten graduating seniors from Grace Dodge High School were awarded certificates for their 1200+ hours of mandatory internship hours.

Of the ten students, James Cowan was awarded a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card to go towards college books. Christopher Burgos was awarded a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card for demonstrating his ability to teach computer related classes during his service. Both of these interns, along with Deivi Holguin, served at two of Phipps CDC's community centers and worked more hours than all other interns. They continue to serve as volunteers.

Another intern, Alijah Rojas, was accepted as an intern to continue further computer and network training, at Phipps CDC headquarters in Manhattan.

All ten interns were well trained and Phipps Community Development Corporation acknowledged their character and contributions at the Grace Dodge Awards Assembly. The parents were commended for raising such fine young men as were the Grace Dodge staff for doing a remarkable job in educating and training them.

Phipps CDC at West Farms Technology & Career Center extends a warm thank you to Yaritza Ruiz and Mr. Baum for their diligence in fostering a great relationship with the Educational Technology Program for the last 4 years to collaborate in providing their students with a technology internship.

    Students & Internet Homework
    05-29-08
    Reported by: Technology & Learning - Nov 2007 - Vol.28; p.7

96% - The percentage of school districts that say at least some of their teachers assign homework requiring internet use. While this figure is good news on one front, it is disturbing on another. Representatives of the national School Boards Association, which commissioned the study and spoke with 250 school districts leaders, are concerned about the growing digital divide between those with home access and those without. Look for a new focus on after-hours and weekend computer access at schools and ramped-up partnerships with community libraries and media centers to help bridge the gap for the "have-nots."

And additional interesting statistics from the study is the reported .08 percent of children (1,227 nine- to 17-years-olds and 1,093 parents responded) who say they've "actually met someone in person from an online encounter without their parents' permission." This, and additional statistics on cyberstalking and cyberbullying, points to what NSBA sees as "...fewer recent or current problems ... than schools fears and policies seem to imply."

    Get your music @ Pandora.com

    Web Site of the Month!

Pandora is an automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. Users enter a song or artist that they enjoy, and the service responds by playing selections that are musically similar. Users provide feedback on the individual song choices - approval or disapproval - which Pandora takes into account for future selections.

While listening, users are offered the ability to buy the songs or albums at Amazon.com or iTunes Store. Over 400 different musical attributes (see List of Music Genome Project attributes) are considered when selecting the next song. These 400 attributes are combined into larger groups called focus traits. There are 2,000 focus traits. Examples of these are rhythm syncopation, key tonality, vocal harmonies and displayed instrumental proficiency.

The Pandora media player is based on OpenLaszlo, allowing for simple cross platform portability; it plays through a browser. Pandora can be listened to through any Slim Devices' or Sonos[1] product(s). MSN Radio stations now run off Pandora.com and use Pandora accounts rather than Windows Live IDs.

The service has two subscription plans: a free subscription supported by advertisements, and a fee-based subscription without these ads. On May 22, 2007, there was a change of the Pandora interface with new pull down menus and buttons. There are also now advertisements "Pandora on the Go" for phones and "Pandora at Home" for hardware and speakers for home purchases. On November 15, 2007, the service introduced "Pandora Classical"[2], now incorporating classical music from the baroque period to the contemporary period into its Music Genome Project.

College & High School Students Get Open Lab on Saturdays!
    05-13-08

Since, March 2007, the WFTCC has been offering Open Lab on Saturdays for College and High School students. Attendance has been growing steadily since then and there are still seats available.

How did Saturday Open Lab start?

Over the past years, teens have come to view the WFTCC as a viable and safe place to use computers and the Internet. Getting on the Internet is free! However, past policies did not allow us to admit minors into our center without adult supervision.

After a review of the issues facing young students in the Bronx, the WFTCC has decided to change policies and extend our Saturday hours. The WFTCC is now exclusively conducting Saturday Open Lab sessions for college and high school students from 11am until 2pm.

Bronx students should come use our lab if they:

    • don't have a computer or Internet at home
    • are tired of library time limits
    • are tired of getting out of school and not being able to reserve a computer
    • need free computer and Internet access to do school work or take online courses
WFTCC welcomes our new lab users. College students are also able to reserve a computer before hand to take online courses or conduct research.

Please call 718.620.1900 for more information.

Learn About Phipps CDC's Educational Technology Action Plan
    01-25-08

As Phipps CDC continues to grow, it is important to identify and plan how technology is integrated into the organization.

In the spring of 2005, a steering committee comprised of management, MIS, volunteers, and staff met for the first time to develop an Educational Technology plan. This plan will help us to better integrate technology into our programming, strategize how to move forward, and ensure that we have adequate resources to support our future work.

Our mission is to enhance quality education for all ages through innovative technological strategies that respond to different learning styles. We use a project-based approach that involves staff and students and results in a dynamic learning community.

As a longstanding community-based organization, we recognize the equity issues that surround access to technology, which we address by designing courses including office applications, technology-supported academic instruction, new media offerings, and bilingual classes.

We extend our gratitude to the following people for helping to build and maintain our presence in the Bronx. The work that we do would not be possible if not for the support of our local politicians:

Estudiantes y sus tareas en el Internet
    12-18-07

The Return of the Phipps West Farmers' Market!
    12-06-07

Dir. of Environmental Education Jennifer Plewka accepting award on behalf of Phipps from NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg. The West Farmers' Market is back to provide the West Farms community with affordable produce. It was their 2006 success that earned them honors this July when Mayor Bloomberg presented Phipps' West Farmers' Market team with the Neighborhood Achievement Award, in accordance with the Commission for Small Businesses.

Equipped with a team of Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) workers, dedicated to the environmental and nutritional education of the West Farms community, the second year of Phipps' West Farmer's market is poised for another Summer of success.

The SYEP workers have been trained to assist with the maintenance and educational programs at two gardens; Drew Gardens and Krystal Gardens. Second year Environmental Program Associate Norma Sepulveda, age 17, says that since joining the team, she's been eating more salads and peaches. First year SYEP worker Chris Palacios, age 14, sneaks in a snowpea here and there while working the Farmers' Market stand.

This is Phipps' Environmental and Nutrition Education Team (L to R) Phil Davis-18, Norma Sepulveda-17, Brian Morales-14, Chris Palacios-14, Farm & Nutrition Coordinator - Sara Katz, Dir. of Environmental Edu - Jennifer Plewka

In fact, all of the SYEP workers have been positively influenced in their diet preferences since joining the team. Although they haven't given up on McDonalds, foods they've never encountered before such as: raw mint, wineberries, nuts, mangos and other healthy foods have been creeping into their diets than in years past.

With the Bronx in the midst of a health crisis, the Farmers' Market is a small effort for a big problem. About 27% of South Bronx residents are obese, as opposed to 16% of residents citywide, contributing to the area's disproportionately high rates of diseases like diabetes.

Unhealthy eating habits, which is partly a result from a lack of options for acquiring fresh produce, contribute to the Bronx's health problems. There is a great need for awareness concerning nutrition related health problems among Bronx residents. The Farmers' Market is Phipps' attempt to counter the unavailability of fresh and affordable produce.

The 3 goals for the Environmental Program are as follows:
    • Fostering a new relationship among youth and the general community with the environment and personal nutrition.
    • Provide fresh affordable organic produce for the Bronx community.
    • Maintain and advocate for public green space for community use.
Despite being stifled with theft of equipment of over $1000 in the past year, Phipps' Environmental Education team has persevered to achieve their goals and whose efforts have been acknowledged by the NYC Mayor and Phipps.

NYC Broadband Advisory Committee Holds Public Hearing on Fast Internet Access
    10-26-07

The NYC-BAC at Bronx Community CollegeIn the first-ever public hearing of the New York City Broadband Advisory Committee, college and university representatives, non-profit leaders, businesses, as well as New York City middle and high school students and teachers convened at the Bronx Community College Gould Memorial Library to provide their testimonies as to the importance of affordable and reliable Internet access.

Honorable NYC Council Gale BrewerPresiding over the event was the Honorable Gale Brewer, Chair of the Committee on Technology in Government. Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. spoke effectively for the need and reach of equitable Internet/Broadband access saying, ".of the 33% of Bronx households with computers, only 14% have regular Internet access for families earning $25,000 or less." Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion

The key points that were raised concerning the negative impact that a lack of high-speed Internet access has on our NYC middle, high school, and college students were:

    • Low-income college students that cannot pay for monthly Internet access do not have the option of taking on-line courses which allows high-income college students to have a job and manage their time with more flexibility. Single parents could also pursue higher education from home with greater chance of success.

    • NYC Public Library hours conflict with NYC School hours; students complained that access at the library has 30 minute time limits. By the time NYC students get out of school, most of the computers are unavailable for Internet use because adults, seniors citizens, and the unemployed are already there and signed up well into the evening.

    • Teachers, who can successfully integrate technology into their curricula and teaching practices, struggle to find themselves in a classroom where all of their students have Internet access at home. The non-ubiquitous nature of Internet access does not allow teachers to assign homework that can be done at home by all students.

These are only some of the issues regarding education that need to be addressed when facing the reality of what the digital divide means and who it affects. In a 2003 sampling of 15 year olds throughout 41 countries, the United States ranked 25th in math and 20th in science
(Source). To add technology as an obstacle to learning and progress only thwarts the abilities of our nation and its youth to compete economically, both at home and internationally.

Technology transcends all cultures but not all income groups. However, countries such as France, Japan (Source), the Republic of Korea, Sweden and Germany are aggressively laying down the legislative policies and physical infrastructure for high-speed Internet access for all their citizens. Broadband Internet providers compete for subscribers, resulting in lower prices for high-speed Internet services when compared to US companies such as TimeWarner, Cable Vision, or Verizon.

What this means is that more of Europe's citizens and more of Asia's citizens are empowered to compete and contribute to their economies as well as have equal opportunities for access, research, and studies. By making broadband more affordable and accessible to all, and not just to those who can afford it, there is more participation, growth, and economic spurts induced by all income groups.

The points raised at the hearing has provided the Educational Technology Program (ETP) at Phipps' WFTCC site with the chance to respond to the issues concerning access for our students.

For the month of May, we will now be expanding our Saturday 2-hour offering of Open Lab for Teens, and changing it to Open Lab for College and High School Students. The 11am to 1pm schedule will be extended from 11am to 2pm. College and high school students who need to do school related work are welcome to reserve a computer by presenting a school id.
We hope to be able to do more for our NYC students in the future.

The problem of accessibility and affordability still exists when it comes to the Internet and computer technology. Until NYC finally sets in place what the Broadband Advisory Committee will hopefully achieve, the existence of the West Farms Technology & Career Center reveals the crucial reason why it is strongly needed in West Farms and many more parts of the Bronx.

Phipps CDC to Open New Site in Sept 2007 at Melrose
    10-26-07

In the legacy and success of the West Farms Technology & Career Center (WFTCC), a new center is in development in the Melrose area of the Bronx. A brand new facility will house Phipps' latest commitment to community development.

"We are really excited about our new Melrose Community Education Center (Melrose CEC) and think it will meet a range of academic and vocational needs in this community," said CEO & Executive Director, Stephen Tosh, Phipps CDC. "With ESL, literacy, GED, and SAT preparation, and a state-of-the-art computer lab, we will help teens and adults pursue educational and career goals. We are using our highly successful West Farms Center (WFTCC) as the model and calling on the expertise of our talented staff to develop the programs and classes."

The Melrose site will feature 2 additional rooms which represent a new shift in strategy and demonstrates Phipps' understanding of how to best accommodate the needs of the community:
    • A drop-in childcare facility
    • A computer kiosk center
One of the main challenges of attending classes at the WFTCC site was the lack of on-site childcare. However, at the Melrose CEC, parents with young children will have the opportunity to fully participate in the classes and programs with on-site childcare as a vital component of Melrose CEC services.

The kiosk center will serve as a supplementary computer and internet resource for all users throughout the entire day. Clients and students that do not need technology classes will be able to use the kiosk center while regular classes are in session. The availability of the kiosk computers will also ease the anticipated strain on the new computer lab once all programs become active.

Phipps is not alone in its mission to build and improve conditions in Bronx communities. On June 18, JP Morgan Chase, one of many contributors to the Melrose project, presented Phipps CDC with a check donation to go towards construction costs.

Left to right: Angel Aracena, Director of Educational Technology, PCDC; Ronay Menschel, Chairman of the Board, Phipps Houses; Meiling Viera Delgado, Program Director for Phipps Family Services, PCDC; Gayle Jennings O'Byrne, Community Relations Officer, JPMC; Stephen Tosh, Executive Director/CEO - Phipps Community Development Corporation.

    Other contributors include:
    • The Starr Foundation
    • The Bank of New York
    • Carson Family Charitable Trust
    • May & Samuel Rudin Family Foundation
    • Rhodebeck Foundation
    • Achelis Foundation
    • Robert E. & Judith O. Rubin Foundation
    • Roy J. Zuckerberg Foundation
    • MacArthur Foundation
The growing expansion into other Bronx communities exemplifies Phipps CDC's determination to reach out with quality community services, while Phipps Houses, our affiliate company, leads the way in purchasing properties and turning them into affordable housing in many areas of the Bronx.

The company's success has led to the availability of many free services and benefits for thousands of Bronx residents. Phipps reaffirms its dedication to the community and its mission with the opening of the Melrose CEC in September 2007.

Legendary Tuskegee Airman is Phipps Board Member
    09-13-07

Dr. Roscoe Brown welcomed to the podium by President Bush to accept his Congressional Gold Medal On Feb 15, 2007, the WFTCC was honored in having hosted a legendary guest who on March 29th, 2007 would receive the Congressional Gold Medal from the President of the United States, in honor of his service as an Air Force pilot in a squadron consisting of only African American fighter pilots.

Dr. Roscoe Brown, a former Tuskegee Airman, is seen here speaking to WFTCC students about the struggle for success. He also went into detail about an aerial combat maneuver that he created and successfully used against Nazi fighters during World War II.

Dr. Brown speaking to WFTCC students and clients about past hardships and triumphs Dr. Brown explains with his hands how he... ...positioned himself behind and underneath enemy fighters

Many of our staff acknowledged that Dr. Brown is walking history. It was ironic that he fought for a country against the Hitler regime, only to come back to the same country which was segregated at the time in 1945. It was only appropriate that President Bush acknowledged the struggle of the "Red Tails," as they were known, by offering an apology and a salute to atone for past mistakes. Click
here to listen to Dr. Brown speak.

Employment Coordinator Edward Figueroa and Assistant Executive Director Rosemary Ordoñez-Jenkins pose with Dr. Brown after the Black History Month Assembly of 2007For almost 20 years, Dr. Brown has served as a member of Phipps Houses' Board of Trustees, the parent company of Phipps Community Development Corporation. His story is a shining example of how people in the worst of circumstances can prevail and show such courage, not specifically in battle, but in the common everyday struggle here at home in the US.

Lighting Tech that Saves You Money $$$
    08-27-07

With summer weather already here, saving energy and saving money become more important at this time of the year. To save money, switching to CFL bulbs is one simple thing family homes can do.

    What is a CFL bulb?

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp. It is a different light bulb that's been around since the 1980s. Today, improvements in CFL light bulbs will save you money on your electric bill and conserve energy.

There is only one precaution families need to take:
    • Do not break the CFL bulb! Many brands of CFL light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury.
    • Do not throw in the trash. CFL bulbs need to be taken to a recycling center for proper disposal.

Despite this precaution, it is still worth the effort to dispose of the CFL bulbs properly because it keeps your family safe and keeps the environment safe. You won't be going to your local CFL disposal center any time soon because they last much longer than regular incandescent light bulbs.

A regular light bulb might use 60 to 75 watts or more of energy. A CFL light bulb is just as bright and will use only 10 watts of energy. When you do the math, 5 regular light bulbs at 75 watts uses 375 watts. If you replace them with 5 CFL light bulbs, you're only using 50 watts, and that is where families can save money on their electric bills every month.

If you happen to break a CFL bulb, use a wet cloth to clean up. Do not vacuum or handle the CFL pieces with your bare hands.

¡El Regreso del Phipps West Farmers' Market!
    08-17-07
    New!

Dir. of Environmental Education Jennifer Plewka accepting award on behalf of Phipps from NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

This is Phipps' Environmental and Nutrition Education Team (L to R) Phil Davis-18, Norma Sepulveda-17, Brian Morales-14, Chris Palacios-14, Farm & Nutrition Coordinator - Sara Katz, Dir. of Environmental Edu - Jennifer Plewka

    Phipps West Farmers' Market Logo

Keep Kids & Teens Safe on the Internet

    07-20-07

About 1 in 5 children were sexually solicited or approached on the Internet in 2006. 70% of these children were home when the solicitations occurred. 65% of these solicitations occurred on the Internet and 24% occurred during IM or Instant Messenger chats. There are more then 30 million children that use the Internet nation wide. (David Finkelhor, Kimberly J. Mitchel, and Janis Wolak. On-line Victimization: A Report on the Nation's Youth. Alexandria, Virginia: National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2000, page8.) If you want to understand how easy it is to connect with young people on the Internet, click here:
Video on how predators find and track young people.

NBC News Dateline Correspondent Chris Hansen has interviewed dozens of men that went to a house to visit a 13 year old girl after they had met on-line. After a brief discussion with Chris Hansen and graphic details about what the men said to the 13 year old girl on-line, the police move in and make the arrest.

Fortunately, the 13 year old girl on-line is actually Perverted-Justice, a watchdog group that pose as teen minors to lure potential or actual sex offenders to a home. When the suspect incriminates himself by actually going to the home where the 13 year old girl is said to be, a young woman lets the suspect in, only to be interviewed by Chris Hansen a few seconds later, with police waiting to make the arrest.

If you watch the show, take the opportunity to discuss Internet safety with your children. Even if you don't watch the show, ask them what they like to do on-line and to be careful who they chat with. You and your children can listen together to Julie's story. Veteran Perspectives
    02-08-07

Since the inception of exclusive computer classes for seniors in 2004, the West Farms Technology & Career Center has been the focal point of bridging the digital gap that has had a particularly isolating impact on seniors everywhere.

Seniors may not be have been born into the digital generations of the last few decades, but this doesn't mean that they are going to sit back and keep standing on line at the pharmacy when they can fill their prescriptions on-line at a computer. Nor are they willing to stand in line any longer at the post office and pay for stamps when they can get on-line, set up an e-mail account, and communicate with friends and family for free. Seniors at WFTCC have come a long way from being part of the digital gap, to being part of the digital community. Here are two stories.

Cyril Davis, A Korean War Veteran, has been a part of the WFTCC community for 2 years. He went out and bought a computer but as soon as he managed to set it up, he didn't know what to do with it or how to use the office applications:

Angel: Cyril, how old were you when you first learned to use a computer?

Cyril: I was about 68 years old when I first learned how to use a computer.

Angel: Do you feel that seniors can still learn about computer technology?

Cyril: Yes I do strongly believe seniors can learn quite a lot about computers, given time. Most seniors have plenty of time to dedicate to learning, and are willing, which sort of gives them the advantage.

Angel: What have you learned during your time here at WFTCC?

Cyril: As for speaking for myself, I have learned quite a few things, and wanting to learn much more. I have learned Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, how to mail-merge, computer basics, which I find most important about owning and operating a computer. I've even started learning about Photoshop. A very important class in which I like very much, thanks very much to WFTCC.

Sydney McFadden, a Vietnam War Veteran who was decorated with the Purple Heart, discussed his negative experience with a computer that was withheld from him after he sent it in for repairs and the positive experiences that motivated him to get his computer back.

Angel: Who donated the computer to you and who helped you get it back?

Sydney: Help Disabled War Veterans (HDWV) donated a computer to me through APC Technology Group in California. The New York Police Department helped me get it back.

Angel: How long did you have the computer before you sent it in for repairs?

Sydney: I had it for 4 or 5 years but really wasn't able to do much with it.

Angel: Why did you give it to the person who ended up keeping your computer for 9 months?

Sydney: Something was wrong with it and needed fixing.

Angel: What are you able to do now with your computer since you got it back? How has the Educational Technology Program (ETP) helped you?

Sydney: I learned basic computer skills at Phipps' technology center (WFTCC). I had no knowledge of the computer parts and their functions before. the motherboard, memory, then the math behind the computers, bites in KB, MB, and GB. It (ETP) helped me become knowledgeable of today's technology. I had 3 classes of basics (Microsoft Office applications), Internet, Apple computer systems, with typing 3 times a week. With all that learning, that's when I decided to get the police to help me get my computer back.

As with any study and training, learning how to use the computer and manage your money and life on the internet takes time and courage on the part of the student. Patience and a sincere consistency is what the teacher will need to help elevate students to a level of independence, where the teacher is no longer needed.

Sydney and Cyril now only grace us with their presence during a special event or when a new class is offered. Nowadays they stay at home more often using their computers and surfing the internet.

    I'll miss them, proudly.

We hope to continue our work with AAP to provide free HIV testing to community residents. For more information about free HIV testing please call: 718.881.TEST.

The Forget Me Not club officially began December 2004
      04-18-05

After a long hiatus, the senior citizens were back in the computer labs as the Forget Me Not club. CyberSeniors was the former name of the group of senior citizens that use to frequent our computer labs during times that were specially designated for them.

The revival of the presence of our community seniors developed when Angel Aracena, WFCC's Education Technologist and Maritza Martinez, Lambert Houses' Senior Service Coordinator, teamed up to get Lambert-housed seniors into WFCC computer labs.

With Mrs. Martinez working directly and on-site with the seniors, the Forget Me Not club stands to become a mainstay in the growing number of programs being offered by the WFCC Educational Technology Program.

It is important to keep our Senior community members active in the technology field. The Internet can provide quick, easy, and accomodating resources and information for seniors. Learning how to use e-mail will save money on stamps, envelopes, and trips to the post office where lines may be time consuming. Learning how to use computers enables anyone to be more productive. Learning does not stop at any age.
