Education Programs

ESL Students practice their English in class during group exercise.

We believe that education is the foundation for the development of a career and responsible citizens. Our education programs operate in association with the Education Center of the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Housing Authority. Our programs include:

Our education program also offers special attention to the arts throughout the year. These classes have included poetry classes with authors such as Willie Perdomo, theatre classes with Tony Kushner and the Public Theatre, and art classes in association with Doing Art Together.

We also work proudly with the PEN American Reading and Writing Program. This program provides books for our students to read. The authors of these books then visit our Community Education Center to discuss the points and themes of their books with the students. PEN American also mails books to other literature programs, community centers, schools, prisons, and other sites across the nation. They reach people and students who have learned to read but do not have an active relationship with literature.

In the past we have had many notable authors visit including Dorothy Allison, Junot Diaz, Jonathan Ames, Elmaz Abinader, and Angie Cruz.
